Know Your Spine

Your spine, also known as your backbone, is a complex structure made up of several key components, each playing a vital role in its overall function.

Bones (Vertebrae)

  • The backbone is a column of 26 individual bones called vertebrae. These bones interlock to provide structure, support your weight, and protect the delicate spinal cord within.
  • Each vertebra has a strong, round body in front and a bony ring in the back that forms the spinal canal. This canal creates a safe passage for the spinal cord.
  • The vertebrae are further categorized based on their location in the spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccyx) and have unique features depending on the specific function they perform.

Discs

  • Nestled between each vertebra (except the sacrum and coccyx) are the intervertebral discs. These act as shock absorbers, cushioning the vertebrae and preventing them from grinding against each other during movement.
  • Discs have a tough, fibrous outer ring and a gel-like center that provides flexibility and distributes pressure evenly.
  • With age or due to injury, discs can wear down or herniate, causing pain and limiting mobility.

Nerves

  • Running through the spinal canal is the spinal cord, a bundle of nerves that connects your brain to the rest of your body. It’s the information highway that carries messages controlling movement, sensation, and organ function.
  • From the spinal cord, smaller nerve branches exit through openings between the vertebrae and travel throughout the body.
  • Keeping the spine healthy ensures optimal nerve function, allowing you to move freely and feel sensations from head to toe.
